Bring a Trailer Auction 5 Composite For Sale

Yesterday was quite a day watching the finale of BaT Auction #4. Four out of six cars met reserve and were marked sold, and the other two missed their reserves by very narrow margins. We'd call it a great success, and think the reserve model with no minimum bid really seems to create the right interest and access. That, plus it was a fantastic day for Mr. Vespa.

There were some concerns voiced that any cars not meeting reserves were a disappointment and that we should never let that happen. We honestly thought the reserves were fair on the cars that came up short, and think bidders might have missed out, particularly on the 914. We'd love to see everything sell, but we aren't going to do anything artificial to make that happen, so we fully expect there to be cars that do not hit reserve. We'd rather optimize for BaT Success Stories from happy buyers and sellers, like we have always done, which is something we oddly never hear mentioned in auction press releases about world record prices or massive sell-through rates. Are the buyers happy in the end?

We do think we could do a better job with handling the cars that don't meet reserve, so we are engineering a way for the high bidder to be informed of the reserve if he comes up short, and an easy way to give him priority contact with the seller to arrive at a deal. After all, he earned that right by bidding to win, so it seems fair.

Today we are rolling out the next six cars in our BaT Auction #5, again with no minimum bids and reasonable reserves on all cars. It should be another interesting week. Take a look here at the BaT Auctions page for details. Thanks for all the great feedback and comments/questions/expertise posted on the auction listings. It really added to the experience! As always, we welcome your feedback.

1975-Bricklin-SV-1-For-Sale-Front

This 1975 Bricklin SV-1 (VIN 00021BX5S001191) is said to be a completely original 2-owner survivor with only 45k documented miles. The seller adds that it runs well, needs nothing, and comes with all of its original paperwork right down to the window sticker. The brainchild of Subaru's first US importer Malcolm Bricklin, the SV-1 was a market failure, and the company folded after only three years of production. 40 years on, however, they offer an interesting story, gullwing doors and a proven Ford V8 drivetrain for reasonable prices. Find this one here on eBay in Trabuco Canyon, California with a $12,999 BIN.

RACE WAGON 1995 Volvo 850 turbo wagon

8/27/2014 Update: This Volvo is once again on the market, and it is unclear whether it sold last time or if this is the same seller. He says he has added 4000 street miles since then. Find it here on Craigslist in Bainbridge Island, Washington for $11,500. Special thanks to BaT reader Chris C. for the update!

From 4/29/2014:

This 1995 Volvo 850 turbo wagon is heavily modified as a street/track car in the style of the BTCC Walkinshaw touring wagons. The seller says that the car has 1500 miles on the entire build. The interior is gutted with only two race buckets and an impressive roll cage. We've thought about building one of these and have searched Craigslist for donors many times, but this one is offered for less than we would have spent on the donor 5-speed wagon and the cage alone. Find it here on Craigslist in Bainbridge Island, Washington for $7500. Special thanks to BaT reader Greg K. for this submission!
