If you were to ask me for advice about long distance touring in a classic, the first words out of my mouth would be the well-worn adage, "Expect the Unexpected". You simply never know what the car, roads, border guards, locals, weather or any other of a long list of variables are going to throw your way. Be mentally prepared for anything and, most importantly, be willing to be patient and understanding when plans change or things go wrong. In the end, the problems are part of what color the adventure and make it memorable.
After a week of work in Basel doing my day job, I was excited to jump back into the Flaminia and pick up my wife and son from the airport in Zurich. I have done the drive from Basel to Zurich many times now and it's a nice fast highway with some decent scenery, but nothing particularly exciting, so you can imagine my sudden shock as I was cruising along and put on the brakes to avoid a car that cut in front of me, only to feel the pedal go soft almost all the way to the floor! Near the floor, the car did slow down, but it was far too late and I had quite a fright for half a second thinking it wasn't going to stop at all.
