Current BaT Auction - Ends Wednesday, October 22, 2014
This just in from the owner of the Lancia Fulvia that we featured last year. The owner sent us a Success Story (link), then proceeded to to run the La Carrera Panamericana last year where he had engine trouble (link). This year he is back, with an improved car and info for BaT fans straight from Mexico. Go, Jose, Go!
"BaT, A Yank, a Brit, an Italian, a German, a Greek and a Mexican walk into a bar... the Fulvia is back for a 2nd stab at Carrera Panamericana!!
Sounds like the start of a joke, but that's the kind of "global effort" that started in Nov 2012 with a BaT post about the "San-Remo Proven" Lancia Fulvia until today, when the Fulvia is about to set off for its 2nd run of Carrera Panamericana (some of you will recall the 1st one ended with a blown engine on day 3 - and no, sadly, I don't mean turbocharged).
Changes are numerous for 2014: a 1.6L engine on Webers; taller, new gear ratios better suited to the Carrera; custom made exhaust manifold; yet another round of rollbar/safety upgrades; stripping out the interior further; putting all switches and buttons within reach when we are buckled-up (an epic fail last year); MSD ignition; fiberglass trunk and hood lids (more on that later); taller and wider wheel arches; a Terratrip and too many other minute changes to mention - individually they are not so exciting but putting them all together we think we have a faster, more reliable, more pragmatical and safer race car. Of course the car is now - as most Carrera Panamericana cars - very different from original - so I apologize to all the purists - particularly Ed L. Click here to read more... |
This 1953 Volkswagen Beetle (chassis 504993) is from the first year of oval rear window production, a changeover from even earlier cars that had a similarly shaped but split configuration. Restored a few years back and sold through the same website it's currently listed on, the car looks very correct throughout and appears to be holding up very well. Fully stock with six volt electrics, 1100cc, 25 HP, single carb motor, push-button start and semaphore turn signals, these early Beetles make later 1.5L models seem thoroughly modern in comparison, but offer even more in the way of charming old car quirks in compensation. Find this one here at oldbug.com in North Dakota for $21,750 OBO.
