"There's some confusion here. The 912E wasn't a continuation of the 912, it was a stopgap car meant to fill the price slot between the 914 and the 911 while the 924 was late to market. It used a modified VW Type IV engine and a version of the 915 trans (923) with 7:31 ring and pinion. Chassis was identical to the 911, with the exception of the oil tank. Dropping a torquey 3.0 and matching 915 in this chassis is an excellent improvement."
