See Where They Rust: 1958 Porsche 356A
"See Where They Rust" is a series and category where we feature listings that do a particularly good job displaying where certain models tend to suffer from rust. We love looking for rust-free cars, but we have learned a ton about how to inspect the dry cars from looking at photos of heavily rusted models. Obviously floors and rocker panels are always at risk, but every model has different special areas where they corrode. We hope that this series is informative and helpful when you are verifying the claims of sellers and their "99% rust free" cars. -BaT
This 1958 Porsche 356A has rust in all the usual Porsche places, though it does appear to hold a measure of apparent structural integrity that not all rusty Porsches retain. This one shows heavy corrosion everywhere, to the point of the rocker skins being entirely absent. Find it here on Hemmings in Brook Park, Ohio for $39,500. Special thanks to BaT reader Mark K. for this submission.
Monterey Veteran: 1958 V.A.Y. Special
12/22/2015 Update: Another two years later, and this Canadian-built vintage racer is back on the market. Still race-ready and eligible for competition use with a wide variety of sanctioning bodies including CSRG, HMSA, SOVREN and SVRA, the car has recently run at the Monterey Historics and includes many old and more current logbooks. Described as inexpensive and easy to maintain, it’s a small car weighing under half a ton and is powered by a freshly built and tuned 1275 BMC A-series four. Find it here on eBay in Sloughhouse, California with reserve not met. Special thanks to BaT reader Currie B. for this submission.
T-56 6-Speed Swapped: 1988 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z
This 1988 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z (VIN 1G1FP2187JL144773) looks nice with a rare color combination and 16k claimed miles, but what really caught our attention is its mildly built motor and T-56 6-speed manual trans swap. These later third generation cars have always been good lookers, and this one should finally have a degree of performance to match. Find it here on eBay in Phoenix, Arizona with reserve not met.
Wrong But Right: Super Sharp 1986 Mercedes Benz 190E 2.3-16 Automatic
This 1986 Mercedes Benz 190E 2.3-16 (VIN WDBDA34D1GF166319) is described by the seller as a rust-free West Coast-sourced car. Further said to be fully functional, sale includes a dealer-stamped maintenance book whose latest entry was 5k miles back. The lack of a proper manual is far from ideal, but this one is so beautifully preserved that it’s still worth a closer look in our opinion. Find it here on eBay in Howell, New Jersey with reserve not met.
