8.40 @ 157 MPH: 1981 Mercedes-Benz 450SLC

81 Mercedes 450 SLC Drag Race

1981 Mercedes-Benz 450SLC is described as a rolling shell that’s setup to make use of a big block Chevy V8 and Powerglide automatic transmission combo. A Strange front end, four-link rear, big Wilwood brakes and new tires are mentioned as well, the latter having been used for just two passes. The seller claims it’s been down the quarter in 8.40 seconds at 157 MPH, and offers a Shafiroff race 540 and similarly pro-built trans for an additional $12k. Find it here on Craigslist in Vancouver, Washington for $13k or trade for a street car.

Rare Double Cab Pick-Up: 1971 Datsun U521

a

This 1971 Datsun U521 is a rare and unusual double-cab pick-up, its scarcity compounded by left-hand drive. Though it looks like a car thanks to many shared panels with a 410/411-series Bluebird, these 520-series vehicles were designed as trucks from the start, with most being built in conventional, separate cab and chassis bodystyles. This one’s been fully restored including cosmetics and mechanicals, and the seller describes it as very nicely kept as well as reliable–they even report that it served as their daily driver while still in Costa Rica. Find it here on Craigslist in Palm Desert, California for $18k. Special thanks to BaT reader Lonetreesteve for this submission!

Crashed Continuation: 1974 Avanti II

b

This 1974 Studebaker Avanti II has clearly been hit in a pretty big way, but despite the rough condition of its pretty Raymond Loewy-designed fiberglass bodywork, the underlying Lark-based chassis looks largely unaffected. These continuation cars were largely hand-built, with quite an interesting back story, more of which is detailed below. Find this project example here at Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles, California for $4,950. Special thanks to BaT reader Shane R. for this submission.

Four or 40 MPH: 1977 Attex 500 Amphibious 6×6

a

This 1977 Attex 500 Superchief is an interesting example of one of several amphibious, multi-wheeled ATV’s designed and built across the US during the 60’s and 70’s, and according to the seller, it’s had one owner from new. Sale includes the trailer seen below, and the ad further claims that it runs well, with needs limited to a wax job and some new gas. Find it here on eBay in Little Hocking, Ohio for $3k OBO.
